27 Apr The Long Walk to Suppress an Appetite For Violence Against Women and Youth During Party Primaries
It was on a cool, bright morning. The sun shone brilliantly, filtering through the clouds. A golden glow spread across the sky as the sun chased the dark clouds away. This was the day that saw over 300 women aspirants from Nairobi County actively participate in a procession to condemn the recent cases of electoral violence across the country. The match was organized by Kenya Human Rights Commission in liaison with FIDA, Youth Agenda, Oxfam and Ripples International. The women aspirants from Nairobi and its environs joined a dedicated team of 2 campaigners who had sacrificed their lives, to embark on 1500 km walk from Kwale to Moyale so as to create awareness and inspire a movement of people committed to the obliteration of all forms of violence against women be it sexual, gender based or electoral violence.
The women aspirants were joined in solidarity with the bikers club in order to condemn political violence against women. The women had decided to make a public spectacle of the perpetrators of violence and thereby suppress their appetite.
“We have incidences where women are robbed and intimidated by goons sent by their opponents. The appetites for violence are increasing towards political party nominations. We will not allow it. We will closely monitor these nominations for it can’t be business as usual where women are intimidated and excluded from political processes for they have rights like every other political aspirant,” reiterated by the CEO of YAA Susan Mwongera.
“Electoral violence against women remains one of the biggest challenges faced by women aspirants and their supporters. We the biker club have heard the cry of our mothers, sisters and friends and have committed to mobilize ourselves to join them and the two men,” Bikers Chair.
