YOUTH PARTICIPATION IN THE  2017 GENERAL ELECTIONS

The Kenyan Youth can be considered as the proverbial phoenix rising from the ashes, one thing is clear they are far from losing hope in influencing this great nation they call home.2017, like every 5 years signals decision time for Kenyans; the one true voice of every Kenyan is getting a chance to exercise their right to vote. IEBC, Civil Society and Political Parties actively mounted a major campaign to sensitise the young people on the need to register as voters while educating them on the actual process of registering.

KENYA NIGHT MARKET

The Ignite Kenya Youth Night Market is an inaugural night market concept aimed at jump-starting the 24-hour economy in the country, powered by the strength of the youth entrepreneurs. The market is primarily a fun-filled open-air market in the night featuring various vendors (mostly youth start-ups) selling merchandise such as clothes & shoes, cosmetics, food & drinks, sports & fitness, electronics, arts, books, fashion, kitchen ware, decor, kids toys, etc. The market aims to bring out the best fusion of shopping, dining and socialising while creating space for young people to showcase their best attributes.

YOUNG WOMEN IN POLITICS BY YOUTH AGENDA

The continued struggle of the women and youth movement in Kenya and the world over is one which cannot be ignored by the rest of the society. In redefining their position as that of an equal partner in development the women and the youth have made great strides ahead. Their role in policy and decision-making processes is slowly but painfully taking root in Kenya.

PUBLIC INTEGRITY HANDBOOK BY YOUTH AGENDA

The Youth Agenda seeks to enable the young people maintain engagement with their elected leaders through informed understanding of integrity and accountability. The Public Integrity in the Context of Devolved Governments Handbook provides pertinent knowledge to the youth aimed at enabling them monitor the performance of the elected representatives and engage on the impact the representatives have had on their communities.

YOUTH PARTICIPATION IN POLITICAL PARTIES

The undemocratic tendencies in many political parties in Kenya and other parts of Africa have negatively affected the legitimacy of the laid out electoral rules. The internal democracy for many political parties in this region is wanting. The gate keepers who are namely rich and older adult male do not tolerate active participation of youth and young people in top party leadership and management structures.

YOUTH PROBLEMS…YOUTH SOLUTIONS 

Kenya has a fairly young population, with those below 34 years old constituting 78.31% of the population. Being dynamic and energetic these youth have the potential to play a critical role in Kenya’s socio-economic as well as political development. The realisation of Kenya Vision 2030 and the attainment of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) critically depend on the degree of inclusion of the youth in the development agenda.

NAIROBI COUNTY YOUTH PLAN

County Governments are now in place and the citizens are expected to play an active role in contributing to the development of the county plans. The Nairobi County Youth Plan 2013 comes at a very opportune time when the County Government is just beginning the planning cycle. This Plan is a culmination of an initiative by the Youth Agenda in collaboration with the Nairobi County Government through the support of USAID, PACT Inc. and Act Kenya.

THE UNEMPLOYMENT PROBLEM

The voyage towards a new constitution has been long and turbulent and Kenyans are waiting with bated breath to vote for or against the Proposed Constitution. Young people have been at the forefront among other stakeholders in steering the constitutional process – from mass action in the mid 1990s, to Bomas, through Kilifi to Naivasha and back to Delta House, the youth have been dedicated, selfless, resilient and sometimes even radical in pushing for reforms in this country.

YOUTH PARTICIPATION IN POLITICAL PARTIES

The Youth Enterprise Development Fund is offering young people aged 18-34 a unique opportunity to gain access to the much needed financial support to start or expand business. The Fund has developed a wide range of loan products that are flexible and friendly to enable young people start and grow business for personal and national economic growth.

HUSIKA: A Youth Action Guide on Political Participation

The youth are defined in the constitution as a collective group of persons who are between the ages 18 and 35 years. They are an integral part of the Kenyan society constituting 35.4% of the 78.3% total percentage of Kenya’s population of young people below 35 years (Youth Fact Book. IEA, 2010). The experiences – bad or good, that the Kenyan citizen undergo translates directly to the proportion of the population.

We Dared to Dream captures in depth successes registered in the dreamland between 1996-2009. Youth Agenda has come a long way, with many tracing its history to the first National Youth Convention held at Limuru Conference Centre on 7th to 11th March 1997.

Status Of Young Women In Political Parties In Kenya 2012

The representation and participation of young women in political parties is crucial to the success of political parties and also to the development of young women. This study determines the status of young women in political parties, more so, their representation and participation. The introduction of multi-parties in 1991 was expected to herald a democratic and inclusive political culture.

Leadership Vetting Criteria

There is an urgent need for a leadership vetting system that will comprehensively and exhaustively sieve out “bad leaders” within the context of the new Constitution. There already exists many men and women who are providing exemplary leadership in many sectors; they share values, principles and a common vision for Kenya.

The Youth Agenda Strategic Plan 2011 -2015

The Youth Agenda is pleased to present its strategic plan for the next five years(2011-2015). It is a plan that is rich with specifics on how to optimize the opportunities currently unfolding in the country. Firstly, this plan has been designed upon successful completion of the organization’s impact assessment for the period 1996-2009. Together with a follow-up publication titled Dared to Dream, which was launched in April 2010, the impact assessment has helped the organization identify the successes, lessons learn’t and the arising demand.

Students Speak

Challenges to implementing the constitution are many. These can be grouped into content matters, processes of implementing, institutional hangover and complications surrounding the impending  aspects on devolution, land and judiciary among others; overcoming nepotism and patronage along ethnic lines in recruitment of persons and creation of institutions to  implement the constitution; the inefficiencies of public service, yet they have a key role in setting the pace of implementation.

The hope of winning the fight against corruption lies in changing the values, attitude and behavior of the youth of today, the leaders of tomorrow, who will disdain corruption and who are willing to change their attitudes and values toward corruption. The Youth Anti – Corruption Toolkit

The broad objective of this Anti-Corruption Tool Kit is to provide change agents with sufficient grounding to understand what corruption is and strategies for fighting petty corruption. The knowledge gained should be sufficient to enable participants/community members to engage in anti-corruption initiatives especially in devolved funds management and service delivery, especially health, water and education projects.

Kenya Vision 2030

This publication is based on the inputs derived and consolidated from various consultations with groups of youth leaders in an effort by the youth in Kenya to share with other citizens their understanding and concerns on the Vision 2030. These consultations revealed significant areas of concern that require attention. They include: The key assumptions made in the development of the vision; the conspicuous absence of a cultural pillar (also outlining shared national values).

Who Is Guilty?

Guilty: deals with a problem that has become virtually a second skin to our elections – the spectre of electoral violence. It is an account of pre-polls electoral violence in Kenya and seeks to examine the role of the youth and that of others whose role may not have been properly highlighted to date through monitoring and data analysis. Young people have over the years been accused of being the perpetrators of electoral violence in Kenya.
